On route 522 just east of Lewistown is the national guard armory. It is a neat one-story, "I"-plan brick building with an exposed basement executed in the Colonial Revival style. There is an area in back that was an old stable for the Calvary detachment that once was housed on site.
The story goes that when the Calvary became obsolete, the horses were walked a short distance and shot. They were reportedly buried in the area that now forms the parking lot.
Many soldiers that work there report hearing the sounds of horses trotting on the drill floor late at night. Spectral figures have been reported, and there are rumors of several people passing away at this location we are looking into this location and hope to be allowed to do an investigation there.
We have had a report from one of our Facebook members who shares “ My husband's old office was there right by the old stables and he
would hear the clacking sound of horses walking. He would hear somebody saying whoa. He heard footprints upstairs where they used to store hay. This would always happen at night when one or a couple soldiers were there.”
If you do happen to go, and it is winter. Pick a snow day as the grand hill in front of the Armory is a favorite local sledding hill.
