The Crossroads, Long and Dry Valley, near Lewistown, Mifflin County, PA
When my wife and I first moved up to Mifflin county, we had been active in the Paranormal field, but were taking a hiatus while we settled into the area. This experience is prior to us forming NightWatch Paranormal. Well, as you may know, you can take a hiatus all you want, but stuff still happens.
One chilly night we were heading home to Alfarata from Burnham. As I often did, we took a really beautiful 'back' way out of Burnham, Dry Valley Road. This in a mostly straight shot with great big farms on either side of the road for a long while. There is a stop sign where long lane crosses. for those of you who are not from the area, as you come up to the stop sign to your right you have an unobstructed view of the cross road, and can see traffic for about a mile. On the left side there is a bank and tree which blocks the sight line for traffic from that direction. You really need to stop at the posted stop sign, then roll up a little to ensure there is not traffic from the left.
So on this night, approaching the intersection, there is a car way off in the distance on long lane on the right. I come to a stop, glance left and see a car with it's headlights on, fairly close, approaching the intersection. Figuring I'd let the car form the left pass, there would be plenty of time to go before the car from the right arrived. Plan in mind, I turn back to the right to allow the car to clear and keep a tab on the more distant but approaching car. I wait. Still looking right, the car is getting closer, however the left car still has not cleared the intersection. I wait some more. I finally turned back to the left, and there was no car headlights or any sign of a vehicle. Looking into my rear view mirror, there was no receding taillights. My wife also saw the car approaching and confirmed that fact with me. We let the right side car pass, and proceeded on our way.
Now the next day we went back in daylight. Looking the way the mystery car came from, there is high embankments on either side of the road with no driveways. Had the car turned onto our road we would have seen it. The lights would have illuminated our car had they went the way we had come, or we would have seen them in front of us had they turned the way we were going.
We also discovered a white cross on the road side a a few yards down Long lane.
Crossroads are prevalent in mythology where they represent a location "between the worlds". Symbolically, it can mean a locality where two realms touch and therefore represents a place literally "neither here nor there"or "betwixt and between". In a historical context, in England, those who died as criminals or outside the "grace of God" were buried at crossroads to confuse the dead and put them outside the boundary of their settlement.
So what did we see that night? Was it the car replaying the fatal accident? Was it just someone who made a U-turn and we didn't notice? We believe it was a paranormal event, as there is no normal reason for the car to disappear. We wondered if anyone else has had any experiences at this crossroads. Please let us know if you have, we would love to share your stories along with ours.
Several people commented upon this story when we Posted about this location on Facebook. They also have had weird and uncomfortable feelings at this intersection. There was also mention of a bad accident in the 1960's at this location.
